Quarterback Philip Rivers will be glad to be back in Southern California on Thursday night, as the San Diego Chargers (3-4) welcome the Kansas City Chiefs (1-6) to Qualcomm Stadium, with the opening kickoff scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on the NFL Network.
The Chargers are 7.5-point home favorites in the current Week 9 NFL betting odds (courtesy of SBR Forum), while the total has fallen by 1.5 points from its opening number to settle in at 42.5.
Rivers has won six of seven home games against the Chiefs during his career, while the UNDER has cashed in four of the last five meetings overall.
Let's take a closer look at this AFC West affair from a betting perspective, while providing an against-the-spread (ATS) pick along the way.
HOLD ON TO THE %$#!ING BALL (Part 8)!!!!!! Yes Chiefs fans … until our beloved Men In Red have even just one game without a turnover, I will be writing this in each and every preview article. Heck, I’ll promise you that if the Chiefs just match their opponent in turnovers (say, 2 apiece?), I’ll leave this off my next article. The Chiefs are on pace to obliterate the NFL record for turnover ratio, held by the 1965 Steelers(-30). At this rate, the Chiefs will have a -42 ratio. After living through Marty Schottenheimer’s tenure where the Chiefs were at the top of the league in turnover ratio every year, I’m convinced turnovers (both giving and getting) are related to coaching. Even if the Chiefs’ record was reversed (6-1), fans would know that come playoff time, the team that can’t hang onto the ball – or get turnovers themselves – are doomed to failure. This stat alone should have Crennel and his staff worried about their jobs. The first time these two teams played, the Chiefs had their worst game for turnovers (3 fumbles lost, 3 interceptions) and still, the Chargers “only” won by 17. Yeah, 17 points is still 17 points, but considering the Chiefs just handed six of their offensive possessions over to the Chargers, you would have thought San Diego would have won by 28 or more. Hey, Peyton Manning and the Broncos would have done that for sure. The players MUST step up and take responsibility for hanging onto the ball, or not knocking Cassel’s throws up in the air like a volleyball. It’s the only way they can win.
